Jose Manuel Legazpi Gayol (born in 1943) is a painter and native sculptor of Bres (Taramundi, Asturias). The artist forged of a self-taught way, studied Philosophy and Theology up to disdaining the priest's trade; moment in the one that travels to Jordan and contacts the world of the Archaeology and the drawing of pieces proceeding from the excavations. His first sample realizes it in 1960, in the House of Vegadeo's Culture. Since then, his work was a protagonist in more than twenty individual exhibitions, without leaving of side the multiple collective samples in which it has taken part, contests and obtained prizes. It is necessary to emphasize his importance for the History of the Asturian Art, so several collections belonging to museums, centers, collections and deputations teach, already of permanent form, Legazpi's art.

The artist, with a tremendously nourished and multiforme production, in Bily Conejo teaches the universe of the social marginalization across the poverty, the working work, the homosexuality, the alcoholism or the prostitution. The works do not need an explanatory cartela: the spectator can recognize the condition of good part of the prominent figures. The individuals place alone, less frequently in pair or accompanied of an animal, referring to a form of life to the margin of the idealism. The practically neutral funds worry the imagination of the public. But occasionally, minimal details like splits or bottles discover the profession or the situation makes concrete of the men and women represented. Nevertheless, the Legazpi's only intention is that every person interprets to his way the contemplated scenes. The emaciated reality in which the protagonists are fitted comes undone, then, of any intention on the part of the artist of approaching a contemporary moment. They are men tied to his lack of social integration, due to the reason that is.

On the other hand, the technology also is very important to recreate visually the realism and the coldness of the compositions. Specially it is notable that the prominent figures and diverse motives are outlined in relief on the bottom, provoking a dramatic quality created by his volumes. The figures become free of his own world to come closer the spectator by means of the sculptural resource and the company of the shades that it generates. In short, there are mixed the properties of the painting and the sculpture by the intention of innovating and making works that break with the traditional classification; very to Legazpi's taste.

-Title: The work of Daniel Acuña Alvarez.

-Title alternative plastic: from figurative to geometric world (forwards to watercolors, which are the first figurative works - if you visit the Gallery from left to right - and then to the assemblies, not figurative).

-Center Manager of Oviedo-exhibition permanent and free from January 10, 2015.

Daniel Acuña Alvarez (born 1993) is a young artist of Luanco graduated in fine arts from the University of Salamanca and current teacher in practice of drawing. The first time that he showed his work to the public was in June 2013, from the University field. From that moment it has forged a prestigious artistic career, as confirmed by the six exhibitions in which participated and their two awards.

Daniel is an artist who cultivated drawing, watercolor to sculpture made of different materials. In fact, this exhibition individually dedicated to his work displays rich plastic capacity. AcuarelasComenzado for his watercolors, many of them are based on the life experience of Daniel, thus reflecting the landscapes of his home town, which is Luanco, either elsewhere in Asturias, and the Palacio de Congresos of Oviedo; very important for the artist to serve as home to his art.

However, some of these paintings, especially the monochrome and bicolor become mysterious and even creepy. They reflect unlocateable landscapes for the Viewer, trails, caves and trees that play with light and shadows generated by a low range of colors.
In terms of his sculpture, the most relevant of the artist are assemblies and the use of multiple materials. It predominates as a main support wood, which is often covered with other materials such as cloth, paper, Ribbon, rope, gypsum, pigments, etc. Select the geometric shapes as the basis in most of their creations, working on rectangles, squares or cubes. In these works is also very important to the consideration given to the space.

Without placing them in a default manner, they lose all meaning, as in the case of the parallel; a table of partially colored wood that cannot be understood if you release your position in the sample. The taste for assemblies connected to Daniel with the world of arte povera, which is characterized by use of waste materials. Through these assemblies also causes a radical rupture within her exhibited work, taking into account views previously watercolors.

Ultimately, the exhibition demonstrates high creativity of the fine arts degree to work with various media, materials and techniques, setting up an art as copious as heterogeneous.

I. ''Edgar Allan Poe, Fernando Pessoa y el cuervo'' / ''Edgar Allan Poe, Fernando Pessoa and the crow'' de (by) Júlio Pomar Culebras

Julio Pomar Culebras (1926-) is a Portuguese painter born in Lisbon. He attended the school of decorative arts Antonio Arroyo and the schools of fine arts of Lisbon and Porto, in the year 1942 was able to show for the first time his works, collectively, in the capital. In 1947, Porto gave him the opportunity to exhibit individually. It was imprisoned for a short period of time because of his opposition to the totalitarian regime of the dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. Their problems with the politics of the time resulted in serious problems both for him and for the Portuguese artistic heritage. The most peculiar was the destruction of frescoes created for the film battle. Despite this, today lives and works in Paris and Lisbon, being one of the most prestigious artists of the 20th century in Portugal.

As for his work, it fits in the abstract expressionism, neo-expressionist movement and also in social realism. "Edgar Allan Poe, Fernando Pessoa and the crow" is a work of the year 1985, which depicts these two momentous exponents of literature in an intimate scene. On the table sits a piece of paper referring to the occupation of men. Allan Poe, especially by the used green color for the face, is portrayed as an eccentric character, appeared with his characteristic moustache and a true gesture of astonishment. Meanwhile, Pessoa used more harmonious colours, which co-ordinated among themselves due to its warmth. The poet had translated into their language the tale of "The Raven", work of the American, because he admired her deeply. It is perhaps represent the moment which Pessoa shows the translation to the novelist and his astonishment.

Flag of Lisbon and detail of "Edgar Allan Poe, Fernando Pessoa and the crow''"

On the other hand, the crows as simple birds also called the attention of the writer. They are also the symbol of Lisbon, and even shown in its coat of arms. Understandable why is les so important in Heraldry due to the hagiography of Saint Vincent: Patron Saint of the city. His coffin traveled by sea, guarded by two crows in order to rest the Holy in the cloister of the Cathedral of Lisbon. He was accompanied by birds from the Church of the crows of the sacral promontory; place that currently does not have a precise location. There is, probably it would be next to the Cape of Saint Vincent (Algarve). In any case, to positively carry out their work, the crows became symbol of the city. Note that these birds still flit by the city, recalling this legend to all residents. Therefore, Júlio Pomar presented paint has powerful symbolic overtones that refers back to the Lisbon history through a theme such as the portrait of two important men of the literature of the 20th century.

La iconografía de Salvador Dalí I: La langosta / The iconography of Salvador Dalí I: The locust

Rostro del Gran Masturbador / The Great Masturbator (1929)

Detalle / Detail

Salvador Dalí, Spanish artist on the one that has treated himself already in this blog, was afraid of the lobsters for phobic questions. His irrational fears towards the celíferos, in which in a beginning he was interested in a positive way, were born during a beach day, when it caught a fish of face similar to that of a terrestrial lobster. This discovery would turn to the insect in a new tragic motive in the work daliniana, tied to the panic and the mishap. In Face of the Great Masturbador it settles in the self-portrait of the painter. There alludes a metaphor that explains the fear that Dalí was feeling on having thought about lewd form about his lover Gala, since during this moment of his life he was considering the sex to be a little seducer but dangerously to sanitary level.

La Fuente / The Font (1930)

Detalle / Detail

In The Font, the lobsters that appear have as intention symbolize an unhapp matter. The interpretation of the subject matter can suggest the attempt of cristianización of the pagan rites. The altar in the center of the Greco-Roman temple gathers a chalice with the Sacred Form. Nevertheless, it is spotted with blood, being understood that there a sacrifice was done, while the vase with head gorgonoide threatens the religion - in the work ''daliniano'' sends often to the intimidation - and the celífero contemplates the battle between the different forms of worship. His representation, since always it is negative, evokes the idea of that the paganism will conquer the faith.

''Penachos de mar, litófitos y conchas'', de Anne Vallayer-Coster (1769) / ''Still life with tuft of marine plants, shells and corals'' (1769)

Anne Vallayer-Coster was a rococo painter who lived in Paris between 1744 and 1818. The young realize esta work, one of the most known it has, to the age of 25 years. Daughter of painters, arguably much of his talent took her young life. Member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1770 was unanimously accepted by scholars, and since then his career is filled with success during his entire life. In 1785 suffers torn a critique of his portrait painting, here's why dump in still lifes; those who made famous the the tan. In his life he turned transcendental amparo received by Queen Marie Antoinette, wife of Louis XVI. The introduced as official painter of the Court, a fact that led to other women in the same category. But when the Queen is executed in 1793, turbulence arrive at the trajectory of the artist, although he could continue painting until natural death occur in 1818.

This still life in particular, to which it is given the title ''Still life with tuft of marine plants, shells and corals'' is a painting whose theme centers on the idealized naturalistic representation of products coming from the ocean. The still lifes of this class became particularly recurrent in the seventeenth century; time equivalent to growing interest malacology (science that studies mollusks).

Vallayer-Coster posed by the collection of these plumes and shells as a vertical composition whose axis are gorgonians ocher. The black background highlights the key of molluscs, which transmit a powerful brightness and vividness. They are especially striking those in the foreground. Here the variety of species is reflected by the representation of murex, mussels, oysters, nautilus, sponges, pearlescent agents...

Of these, the most striking is the queen conch. Because pinkish tones, the narrow and elongated cavity, as well as the wet appearance of the shell, then the time would link the sexual image of the vulva.

Despite this hypothesis, intended to leave Vallayer-Coster was present wealth of the seas, and also the beauty and unusual form of each of its unusual elements.

El monumento funerario en el Humanismo / The tomb in the Humanism

The tomb and the perception of death in Humanism.

John Pope-Hennessy in his work used a Machiavellian appointment, that of "the desire to perpetuate a name" that helps to understand the conception that had over death in humanism. Despite being inevitable, the great characters of the time sought to solve it transcending time. They did it in two ways, through the biographies, which kept alive the history of the character, and through the funerary monument, which perpetuated the sculpted image of the deceased.

The origins of the humanism tomb and configuration.

Before going into the types of funerary monuments in the Renaissance humanist origins tomb and its configuration will be explained.

The tomb is the first humanist Aragazzi Bartholomew, created in 1430 by the architect and sculptor Michelozzo, and now partially dismembered which back then. It can not be regarded as the first tomb of the Renaissance, as there are two other monuments previous to this , and the same author. They are the tomb of Pope John XXIII and Cardinal Rainald Brancacci.

Although the monument of Pope John XXIII is earlier, first I explain the tomb of Cardinal Brancacci, created between 1426-1428 and located in the church of Sant'Angelo a Nilo (Naples). His typology is based directly on a late Gothic precedents that will be useful to understand how the humanist tomb is configured.

He was inspired by monuments such as those made by Tino di Camaino. This Trecento Sienese sculptor prepared the tomb of Mary of Hungary, Queen of Naples, in the church of Santa Maria Donna Regina Vecchia, where we find elements to be seen, although modified in the Brancacci tomb.

In the case of the angels who are the curtains discovering the image of the queen, in the Brancacci tomb are replaced by a young Roman who meditate on the body.

On the other hand , the four cardinal virtues of Tino di Camaino, winged, each with their corresponding iconographic attributes are replaced three austere virtues carrying a rosette.

Thus, the taste for antiquity, Humanism itself defines the Brancacci tomb and a detachment of religion.

On the other hand , the first Renaissance tomb of Pope John XXIII , was conducted in the early 1420 in the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence by Michelozzo and Donatello.

The latter author took only the curtain and bronze effigy of the deceased. This tomb is a transition between the tombs of Tino di Camaino and Brancacci. What stands out most about her is her proper adaptation of the parietal architecture, high, narrow space. Michelozzo, through the tomb of Pope John XXIII established the geometric division of the wall behind the statue and the frieze where any subsequent grave support. They are two features that, together with that seen in the Brancacci tomb monument Aragazzi defined.

With features Aragazzi how are you the tomb, also formed by columns framing the sides of the monument and the upper arch that protected the whole set. They are also features seen above, as well as the representation of the classical virtues.
However, today, the tomb is fragmented and has not been rebuilt its original appearance as possible. Parts of it have disappeared, others are preserved in museums and finally there remains in the current Montepulciano Cathedral where the tomb was relocated after the previous church demolished.

The best known of which is preserved example is the marble effigy of the deceased, even in the cathedral. On the other hand, in the Victoria and Albert Museum they are kept the two angels who must be above the grave , flanking a possible figure of St. Bartholomew as Pope- Hennessy . Angeles as these were already in the tomb of John XXIII.

Tipología de los monumentos funerarios. / Typology of tombs.

After developing the origins of humanist tomb, we distinguish between four types within the funerary monument of the time:

La tumba parietal o de nicho. / The parietal tomb or niche.

This type of tomb next in line from the examples shown. While the writer and humanist Leonardo Bruni criticized in life egocentrism Aragazzi showing the monument at his death he conceived a tomb to his liking that he had much to do with the lawyer. Santa Croce, during 1444-1447, Bernardo Rossellino, architect and sculptor, built this monument Bruni. This man, formed with Brunelleschi, applied in the grave his particular way of designing a building. Thus the novelty of this parietal tomb is that the architecture dictates the shape of the whole. Stop being a static background for the sculpture, and Michelozzo, to take the lead. Only laurel wreath holding two putti of architecture is released. Rossellino also introduced the new concept of sepulchral monument and a bow attached to the wall of triumph.

Lack of religious images , except the Virgin and Child on the lunette . The coffin rests on a sarcophagus beneath the eagles and two victories appear in flight.

The Bruni monument reflecting the qualities of the Renaissance man, implying because someone had to be immortalized. He later repelled decisively Florentine monuments like the tomb Marsuppini (Basilica of Santa Croce), Foreign Minister of the Republic of Florence. It was conducted by Desiderio da Settignano around 1455. The contribution of this artist to sepulchral monument consisted of some of the finest figures of Renaissance sculpture displayed here. Desiderio was interested in reflecting passion and liveliness of movement.

For example, if you compare his Virgin and Child, for this author prevails show the affectionate relationship between mother and son pass an austere and religious message, as in the monument of Leonardo Bruni , where even Christ is blessing , a trait inherited from the prior art.

Another highlight is the parietal tomb of Innocent VIII , built in 1492-1498 by Antonio Pollajuolo in St. Peter's Basilica , Vatican. In this case the configuration is similar to that of their predecessors. What changes is how to represent the deceased as listed in life.

In a seated position, he is blessing and carrying the relic of the Holy Lance , demonstrating their religious, almost rival power of Christ . This sculpture was a milestone in the Renaissance funerary monuments . The work was dismembered in 1606 and reassembled in 1621 wrongly , losing part of its original meaning. He breathed through his new appearance, as important Baroque sculptors like Bernini and Algard.

La capilla funeraria. / The funeral chapel.

Although all tombs have presented must be adapted to an existing context with the Portuguese Cardinal James something else happens. To house the tomb creates a new chapel in San Miniato al Monte (Florence), 1460-1466. Now , the grave will be around a whole worship space that enhances the importance of the character.

The floor of the chapel was square, and the walls were given a uniform treatment. In the decoration of the chapel they lavish involved two sculptors, Antonio Rossellino, who made the tomb and the throne before her, and Luca della Robbia , who designed the roof of glazed terracotta with five medallions representing the four cardinal virtues and gifts of the Holy Spirit in the center. Two painters participated. Baldovinetti she handled under the fresh scallops , plus the Annunciation above the throne , and Antonio Pollajuolo painted the altarpiece and the frescoes on the wall of the altar.

In picture we see the altarpiece with Saints James, Vincent and Eustache.

The chapel is a unitary conception where painting and sculpture are equally important. The tomb is framed by sculptured curtains and empty circular window corresponds to the altar wall contains a Madonna and Child and Two Angels represented flying. In front is the statue of the cardinal. The tomb is conceived as a whole observing image of the deceased.

Expressions are serene and restful attitudes, which for example differs strongly with the art of the monument Marsuppini Desiderio. In addition, classical models as inspiration are used. The Angels located at the top , next to the lunette and the naturalistic drapery demonstrate greater freedom than plastic Desiderio not enjoy.

On the other hand, the Medici Chapels in the Basilica of San Lorenzo, and as the name implies belonging to the Medici family, they correspond to a basically identical to the Cardinal type. However, to be created in a lot, they are converted into the mausoleum of the powerful Florentine lineage. This reveals the desire to wield these families had sumptuous funerary spaces serve as testimony to his great power. It is also proof that the pursuit of perpetuating in time becomes a collective priority in families like this.

The tomb of Giovanni and Piero de Medici is one of the first graves created in this context. It was conducted by Andrea del Verrocchio, a leading silversmith of the time. The tomb was made at the request of Lorenzo the Magnificent in memory of his father Piero and uncle Giovanni. 1469 - 1472. Located in the cemetery, was on one side of the chapel of the transept of the church of San Lorenzo and the other to the Old Sacristy. This tomb remarkable for their particular decoration.

Instead of owning a lavish decoration, this is characterized by the use of classical motifs, such as eggs and darts, palmettes and polls that are raised.

In the sarcophagus itself draws attention on the use of bronze braces in the brackets and the plant decoration, a defendant naturalism. The red porphyry, which is a lightweight material, allowed to use the bronze at the foot of the coffin , which are shaped like turtle. Moreover, this color contrast with the bronze monument makes the highlight chromatically despite its austerity. However, in other tombs of the Medici this sobriety will be forgotten, especially in cases like the tomb of Julius II , whose first project will be illustrated below, and notable for the large mass of figurative and sculptural elements presented.

El templete. / The temple.

The temple is a structure that imitates a temple but with a smaller size.

There are examples of using the temple as a memorial, and we found in the case of the tomb of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, sculptor Gian Cristoforo Romano during the years 1492-1497. Here exempt an architectural structure is used to protect the tomb of the ruler. This type of monument will later influences.

Miguel Angel repeats a similar scheme in the first project for the tomb of Pope Julius II, which is dated in 1505. He conceived the monument as a free rectangular building, according to the hypothesis of the art historian Charles de Tolnay.

Finally, projects temples for funeral monuments both Ludovico Sforza and Gian Giacomo Trivulzio (in picture) were performed later by Leonardo da Vinci. However, they never concluded , although no longer witness the importance given to the possibility of a free monument in front of the parietal common tomb.

La losa sepulcral. / The tombstone.

This type is a tombstone inscribed on the pavement. Usually they made up by an image of the deceased and the epitaph honoring him.

The tombstone of Bishop Giovanni Pecci, in bronze by schiacciato technique, so typical of Donatello, 1426, is a good example of tombstone. It is located in the Cathedral of Siena.

This type of monument evolved to acquire a free character. The tomb of Pope Martin V, the same material and located in St. John Lateran, makes the slab rests on a marble platform. Thus achieved stand on the ground. It is a work attributed to Donatello, although Panofsky says it was the work of the Florentine sculptor Simone Ghini. It is also the only papal tomb made of bronze during the early Renaissance , between the years 1417-31.

It would inspire the monument of Pope Sixtus IV, located in the Basilica of San Pedro. Despite its appearance of tombstone, it is actually a memorial. Pope Sixtus was a Franciscan and sought a more austere than that conceived his nephew, the future Pope Julius II in his honor grave. It was made by Antonio Pollajuolo in 1484-1493. The material used was the bronze. In his reliefs of Donatello's influence is perceived. The monument is configured by a tombstone with the image of Pope over tapered platform and ten reliefs depicting separated by brackets that hold the tomb to a base of green porphyry Liberal Arts. Around the effigy Virtues, which were adaptations of a relief paintings by the author and his brother Piero to Florence Mercatanzia shown.

However, the Liberal Arts are of a contemporary design to work. In the picture a detail of the Geometry shown.

The monument of Sixtus IV was based on a program of Aristotelian scholasticism which reflected the interests of the pope. The future Julius II (Giuliano della Rovere) sought to hide the medieval thought of his uncle by a grave that exalt consciousness toward religion , referring to the Liberal Arts for this purpose.
